Fall 2025, Winter 2026, Spring 2026, Summer 2026
Why do I need to take the assessment?
The Math Placement Assessment is administered using the software program ALEKS, which has been shown to accurately place students in the math course for which they are prepared. Since your program of study has specific math requirements, you will be working to attain a specific score necessary to place you in the course required by your major. You will have up to three opportunities to take the assessment and obtain a score accurately reflecting your math skills.
You may be eligible for an exemption. Please visit the University of Delaware Math Placement Assessment page to determine whether your AP scores or transferred college credits, including dual enrollment courses, can satisfy the assessment requirement.
For more information on the Math Placement Assessment, including details on determining your math placement goal, visit the Math Placement Assessment page. We recommend that you read these materials before taking the assessment.
How do I take the assessment?
To take the Math Placement Assessment, you must schedule an appointment at one of our testing centers located in Newark, Dover and Georgetown (all in Delaware). Please be aware that availability is limited at the Dover and Georgetown locations. We encourage you to book the appointment as soon as possible to guarantee your desired time; waiting until the last minute to schedule your assessment is not an excuse for not being able to find an appointment.
You can complete the assessment after January 27, 2026. Please complete the assessment as soon as possible to ensure that you can register for the spring 2026 semester at your appointment with your advisor.
If you require special accommodations to complete the assessment, you should contact Disability Support Services to discuss the procedure before starting this process. You do not need to wait until you have met with your advisor to schedule an appointment with a DSS counselor regarding the Math Placement Assessment.
Steps
Please read all the steps before scheduling the assessment. Step 4 contains vital information.
- You will need to set up your UD email address before scheduling your assessment. To do so, visit your student portal, My Blue Hen Home.
- Log into ALEKS using your UD e-mail to complete the survey and tutorial. You will not be able to complete the exam without going to the testing center, but this will allow you to be ready at your appointment.
- Please complete the UD exam registration form to schedule an appointment to take the math placement assessment at one of the following three testing centers located in Delaware:
- Newark Testing Center: UD Online Resource Center, 850 Library Ave., Newark, DE 19711.
- Dover Testing Center: Delaware Technical Community College, Charles L. Terry Jr. Campus, Education and Technology Bldg., 2nd Floor, Room 760.
- Georgetown Testing Center: Delaware Technical Community College, Jack F. Owens Campus, Jason Building, Room 182, 18800 Seashore Highway (Rte. 18/404).
- There is a 48-hour cool-down period between each attempt AND you must also spend 5 hours in the prep and learn module before you can retake the assessment. This is mandatory. Instructions on how to access the prep and learn module can be found at the bottom of the Math Placement Assessment page.
- Please know your UD username and password. You will need them to log in.
- You will need a government-issued photo ID, but not your laptop.
- If you arrive more than 15 minutes after your scheduled assessment time, we reserve the right to have you reschedule your appointment (if there are appointments available).
- Go directly into the locker room, turn off and lock up your cell phone and all hats, hoodies or hooded clothing, scarves, sunglasses, food, drink, watches and fitbits. The only headwear allowed to be worn while testing must show in your government-issued ID. Lockers are small; leave larger items at home or in your car. Testing center staff will not hold any personal items for you and are not responsible for any stolen items.
- When you come to the front desk to sign in, all you should have in your possession is your locker key and your government-issued ID (you will not need your cell phone to log in).
- No breaks are allowed during your assessment.
