Why do I need to take the assessment?
The Math Placement Assessment is administered using the software program ALEKS, which has been shown to accurately place students in the math course for which they are prepared. Since your program of study has specific math requirements, you will be working to attain a specific score necessary to place you in the course required by your major. You will have up to three opportunities to take the assessment and obtain a score accurately reflecting your math skills.
You may be eligible for an exemption. Please visit the University of Delaware Math Placement Assessment page to determine whether your AP scores or transferred college credits, including dual enrollment courses, can satisfy the assessment requirement.
For more information on the Math Placement Assessment, including details on determining your math placement goal, visit the Math Placement Assessment page. We recommend that you read these materials before taking the assessment.
How do I take the assessment?
There are two free options available to you. Based upon your distance from the University, you are seeing instructions for the online assessment procedure. If you prefer to test in person at one of our three Delaware testing centers, see our in-person instructions.
You can complete the assessment after January 27, 2026. Please complete the assessment as soon as possible to ensure that you can register for the spring 2026 semester at your appointment with your advisor.
If you require special accommodations to complete the assessment, you should contact Disability Support Services to discuss the procedure before starting this process. You do not need to wait until you have met with your advisor to schedule an appointment with a DSS counselor regarding the Math Placement Assessment.
Online instructions
The online Math Placement Assessment is proctored using ProctorU, an online proctoring system available 24/7, where a live proctor will monitor you taking the assessment. Hence you will need to schedule an appointment, and you will not be able to log in to the assessment prior to your appointment with ProctorU. Each attempt will need to be scheduled and taken with ProctorU.
- You must have a valid government-issued photo ID available in order to authenticate your identity. Approved forms of identification are a driver’s license, military identification card, state identification card or passport.
- Assessments must be taken in a private, secure location. Libraries and coffeehouses are not acceptable. No other people are allowed in your testing area.
- Chromebooks are not supported by ProctorU.
- WARNING: You must remove/disable any remote control software (TeamViewer, GoToMyPC, LogMeIn, etc.) before taking the assessment. If you do not, your score for that attempt will be voided. Refreshing the page or clicking anywhere on it will place you at the end of the queue while you wait for a proctor, which could significantly increase your wait time.
Steps
Please read all the steps before scheduling the assessment. Step 7 contains vital information.
- You will need to set up your UD email address before scheduling your assessment. To do so, visit your student portal, My Blue Hen Home.
- Create an account at UD ProctorU. When providing your contact information, use your UD email address.
- Watch the 7-minute video linked on UD ProctorU. This video demonstrates a proctoring session including the instructions for the password protected assessment. The video answers most questions students have.
- Verify that you have all the necessary equipment at the ProctorU Platform page, and then test your equipment at the ProctorU Test it Out page.
- Log into ALEKS using your UD e-mail to complete the survey and tutorial. You will not be able to complete the assessment without the proctor present, but this will allow you to be ready at your appointment.
- Log on to ProctorU to schedule an appointment to complete the assessment. This must be done at least 72 hours in advance. If you schedule less than 72 hours in advance you will be charged premium scheduling fees.
- There is a 48-hour cool-down period between each attempt AND you must also spend 5 hours in the prep and learn module before you can retake the assessment. This is mandatory. Instructions on how to access the prep and learn module can be found at the bottom of the Math Placement Assessment page.
